Literary Cleveland is organizing a free staged reading titled “How Do We Talk to Each Other?” during the Cleveland Humanities Festival.
Accepted submissions will be adapted, in collaboration with the authors, for the staged reading. The readings will be performed by experienced actors under the direction of Christine Howey.
To Submit:
Deadline to submit: February 28, 2022.
We invite Northeast Ohio writers to contribute a written or spoken word poem, play (scene, monologue, dialogue), personal essay, short story or other literary work addressing themes of dialogue, discourse, and how we talk to each other. Contributors are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly.
Submissions will be read and selected by Literary Cleveland staff and volunteers, not by Gordon Square Review editors. Responses will be sent by mid-March.

Guidelines:
Writers must live in Northeast Ohio to submit.
Submissions can be in any genre and should be less than 1,000 words.
Multiple submissions are allowed. If possible, please include all of your submissions in a single document.
Previously written or published pieces that connect to the theme are also welcome. (Please indicate in your cover letter if the piece has been published elsewhere.)
Examples of the types of submissions we're seeking may include, but are not limited to:
Stories of communication in personal relationships, families, or social media.
Dialogues that dramatize disagreements or debates.
Explorations of communication across cultural, language or other differences.
Narratives that analyze the norms and hidden meanings of discourse.
Poems that touch on dialogue, speaking, hearing and the role of language.
Scenes that inspect the power dynamics of discourse: which voices are heard and which are silenced?
Tales of successful and/or disastrous moments of communication throughout history.
Rants on the state of public discourse today.
Meditations on how we communicate when challenged by Covid and/or the current state of partisan politics.
Speculations on new ways of bridging disagreements and talking with each other.
