CAML Events

The Center for the Advancement of Medical Learning (CAML) offers a variety of opportunities for basic and clinical scientists, physician educators, attending physicians, preceptors, alumni, residents and staff who seek to prepare themselves for teaching and/or improve their teaching skills.

These include our Medical Education Grand Rounds, various Faculty Enrichment and Educational Development (FEED) workshops on site and at CWRU-affiliated sites, the medical school’s annual Education Retreat and more—all designed to join educators in collaborative environments to share ideas and approaches to educating all learners across the continuum.

Medical Education Grand Rounds 

Focused on innovations, controversies and emerging trends in medical education, our grand rounds series provides monthly—or more—offerings on key topics to help our teaching faculty excel in their roles to inspire, teach, and coach our students. Grand rounds are offered on the first Thursday of each month at 5:15 p.m.

Corinne Bazella, MD, FACOG

Description: In this session we will discuss the cognitive levels that multiple choice questions can evaluate and discuss the components of a good question.  We will review common pitfalls when writing a question. Lastly us will learn the  5 step method of writing a good question and practice writing for your educational project.
 

Biography: Dr. Corinne Bazella Dr. Corinne Bazella is a general Ob/Gyn at University Hospitals who specializes in menopausal care. She is the Vice Chair of Education for the Ob/Gyn department and chairs the Committee on Medical Education. Dr. Bazella writes multiple choice questions for the NBME and Chairs the Obstetrics and Gynecology TMDC Committee. She also writes questions for the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology in their yearly “Count Down to CREOG.” Dr. Bazella is a member of the Testing and Assessment Committee for the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics ( APGO) and as part of the committee writes and edits a 800+ question bank and preparation for residency assessment tool for that organization. Corinne is a boy mom to two, loves to speed walk with a good audio book and food is her love language- both cooking and feeding people and enjoying herself!

Shane Angus, CAA, MSA

Description: This program is designed to support educators as they  navigate the complexities of teaching and learning anesthesia in clinical settings. We’ll focus on key aspects of anesthesia education, from the anesthesia preoperative assessment and developing the anesthesia plan to managing the fast-paced, high-stakes environment of the operating room. Using real-world examples like handling unexpected patient outcomes, managing critical events, and improving communication within the peri-anesthesia team, this program will equip you with the tools to support effective teaching.

Biography: Shane Angus, CAA, MSA is the Executive Program Director and Assistant Professor at Ǹ’s School of Medicine, Master of Science in Anesthesia Program. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Biology from University of California Berkeley and has focused his career on patient safety, clinical education, and the development of anesthesia practice both in the U.S. and internationally. Based in Washington, D.C., he is well-positioned to work on these issues in both academic and healthcare settings.

Shane has held various leadership roles, including serving as the past chair of the Accreditation Review Committee for Anesthesiologist Assistant Programs (ARC-AA) and chairing the Association of Anesthesiologist Assistant Programs (AAAP). He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF), where he contributes to initiatives aimed at improving safety in anesthesia care.

Faculty Enrichment and Educational Development (FEED) Series 

The FEED series provides workshops and targeted training for faculty who participate in our curricular activities including IQ facilitator training, workshops on how to give effective feedback, programs on the language of assessment for learning, and discussions about creating a safe and welcoming culture of inclusion in the learning space.

The 2023-2024 FEED programs include continuing medical education (CME) credit for a variety of targeted faculty development offerings. These include courses of the following titles:

  • Tuesday Seminars
  • Science and Art of Medicine Integrated
  • IQ Facilitators Training
  • Faculty Enrichment and Educational Development (FEED) and Academy of Scholar Educators
  • Interprofessional Scholars Collaboration in Teaching and Learning Program (iSCTL)

Annual Education Retreat 

Ǹ School of Medicine hosts an annual education retreat for medical educators, which is facilitated by the Center for Medical Education. The 2024 retreat is scheduled for May 9, 2024, 12:00 - 6:00 pm, at the HEC.  Additional information will be available on the retreat’s website, coming soon.
